How to Design and Present a Poster Like a Pro
Location: Zoom link will be sent to registrants.
Register here.
The presenter is Martina Maritan, scientific communication lead at Nanome and winner of the Best Scientific Poster at the 2021 Visualizing Biological Data conference.
Poster sessions are a fantastic way to network with colleagues in and across disciplines and connect with potential funders, but they can feel daunting to design and awkward to present. Whether you are a first-time poster presenter figuring out how to get started or an experienced poster presenter looking to polish your style, this session will offer tips you can use. It will cover what you should (and should not) put on your poster, what makes an effective title, how to organize your content, as well as evidence-based design principles illuminated with examples from different fields. Specific considerations for both face-to-face and virtual conferences will be discussed. Because your poster is an entry point for a conversation, this session will also explore what it means to “walk someone through” your poster and how to comfortably engage in a fruitful discussion that can lead to new collaborations (and impress the judges).

Every presentation you give is an opportunity to reach new colleagues across disciplines, to market yourself, to impress potential funders, and to broaden awareness about the importance of your field. Yet, we all regularly see speakers that squander the opportunity and lose the audience by falling into the many multimedia presentation pitfall traps. This presentation on presentations will draw from scholarship in cognitive science, neuroscience and psychology to provide evidence-based practical tips on optimizing language, visuals, organization and flow, including strategies for enhancing accessibility and inclusivity. You will also come away with an understanding of how you can work with your own physiology to reduce presentation nerves and boost your presentation poise.

Chelsea Ballinger
Chelsea is a Systems Engineer at Booz Allen Hamilton working as an engineering consultant (although she would best describe her job as professional problem solver).
Her love for physics started back in high school with her egg drop project that saved a raw egg from cracking from a three-story fall. After that project, she couldn’t stop wondering “why?” and decided to continue her curiosity into college by majoring in Physics at UC San Diego. And even though she was voted biggest nerd in her graduating high school class (and she will argue, it only means most popular nerd) she joined and became very involved in her sorority in college, proving nerds too can have a normal, balanced social life.
After graduation and deciding what to be when she grew up, Chelsea decided to continue her studies at San Diego State University in a master’s in mechanical engineering and go to work for the Department of Defense; since she was a Navy kid and wanted to build cool new stuff so that more parents could come home from deployments.
She has worked for Booz Allen Hamilton for three years and has a participated in various projects including research and development on unmanned underwater vehicles and building a better internet for the Navy. When Chelsea isn’t working, you can most likely find her quarantine baking, Netflix bingeing, or catching up with friends and family
Myles Ishihara
Myles is a Systems Engineer at Booz Allen Hamilton working as a prototype engineer, also known as a professional tinkerer.
Myles love for Physics started as a child with a passion for Astronomy and grew to an insatiable curiosity of how the universe works. This curiosity led him to major in Physics and UC San Diego and work in a Cosmology lab – focusing on radio telescopes.
After graduation, Myles wanted went to Purdue University to acquire a masters in Astronautical and Aeronautical Engineering. There, he worked on creating computer simulations and building experimental plasma antennas.
He has worked for Booz Allen Hamilton for three years and has a participated in various projects including research and development on unmanned underwater vehicles, software development, and building prototypes. When Myles isn’t working, you can most likely find him collecting hobbies, playing games with friends, and exploring San Diego.
Nick Mikulsky
Nick is a Systems Engineer at Booz Allen Hamilton working for the Navy’s communications command, which really means he acts as a translator of technical concepts to various other technical and non-technical audiences.
Nick’s love of Physics started when he read A Brief History of Time as a sophomore in high school. Something about physics providing a fundamental explanation of everything resonated with him and he decided on his major then and there. He powered through some math/science fatigue and obtained his Physics degree from UC San Diego, but then decided to make a drastic change for his first post- college job and went into Construction Development and Property Management. After a few years, it was obvious that this career path wasn’t intellectually stimulating enough so he shifted to a career in Defense and Engineering.
Nick started at Booz Allen Hamilton in 2007, and throughout his career has worked in San Diego, CA and Huntsville, AL in support of the Missile Defense Agency and the Navy’s communication command. He’s served in roles focused on network engineering, test engineering, systems engineering, technical project management, digital transformation, and just generally being able to bridge the gap between technical and non-technical communities – which he’s learned is a skillset that lends itself well to physics and other hard sciences and something you can build an entire career around. When Nick isn’t working, you can find him chasing his four kids around or working on his old car.

Diversity in STEM Webinar Series: Inclusion & Equity Solutions to advance Inclusive Excellence in Science
On November 18th, The Student Success Center in the School of Physical Sciences partnered with Dr. Dontarie Stallings to host a webinar called "Organizing and Management of Inclusive Groups" as the second of a three-part Diversity in STEM series.
This session facilitated a discussion on the effect of lack of demographic equitable representation that exists throughout most STEM fields and is inconsistent with a drive towards inclusive excellence, that is necessary to recruit talent from the entirety of our population. It also runs counter to the academic case for diversity, which argues for the causal relationship between diversity and success in research teams. This lack of representation amongst our faculty has perpetuated a view within STEM that devalues the abilities of underrepresented scientists. Through the National Diversity Equity Workshops, engaging social scientists and chemistry department heads, we have identified barriers to inclusive excellence, and solutions—that is, procedures, policies, and practices—to reduce inequities. Our recommendations represent a flexible road map that, if adopted, can lead to a climate that attracts and retains diverse, inclusive and excellent talent in academia.
